The history of Peace Lutheran Church stretches back to Germanic immigration to the Rhineland area. Ancestors of current members began holding church services on Feb. 18, 1854, in various homes in the area forming a congregation that eventually was housed within St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Rhineland.

In the 1940s, the number of Lutherans residing in and around Tillsonburg grew to the point a mission was developed by Rev. Walter Heinze. Services began in 1947, held in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. In 1948 it was organized as St. Lutheran's Church. Ground was broken and a cornerstone laid May 19, 1957 for St. Luke's Lutheran Church at 14 Glendale Drive. Dedicated Nov. 10, 1957, it served its congregation for the subsequent 62 years.

The St. Peter's congregation in Rhineland ceased to be self-sustaining in 2008 and a mutual decision to merge the two congregations and form Peace Lutheran Church was arrived at. Property was purchased in 2008, a building committee appointed, building plans developed in part through visits to other recently-constructed modern facilities, blueprints created and a project manager hired. A ground breaking ceremony was held July 5, 2009 and following acquisition of necessary permits, the foundation was laid and construction began in earnest in November, 2009. The dedication of our current building followed approximately 18 months later.

Our church is wheelchair-accessible and includes a sanctuary seating 250, a Great Hall with room for a similar number, three Sunday School classrooms, a choir room and administrative offices.

Peace Lutheran Church was first served by Pastor Ron Mohr until 2014 when he took a call to become the Mission executive of Lutheran Church-Canada, East District in Kitchener. Peace is now served by Pastor Paul Schallhorn who was installed December 2015, with Sunday services held at 10 a.m. Sunday School and bible study are scheduled for one hour earlier (9 a.m.).
